What are the benefits of spirulina and how to take it?

What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green microalga that grows in alkaline freshwater lakes and is one of the oldest forms of life on Earth. Its unique composition and high nutrient content have made it a global superfood. It has been known since the time of the Aztec civilization, who consumed it as a source of energy and strength.

Today, spirulina is grown under controlled conditions, purified, and transformed into convenient forms — powder, capsules, or tablets. It is most often consumed in tablet form due to ease of dosing and long shelf life.

Unique composition of spirulina

Spirulina is considered one of the most nutritious substances on the planet. It contains:

  • Protein (up to 60–70%) — easily digestible and complete, containing all essential amino acids.

  • Vitamins — B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, E, K.

  • Minerals — iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc.

  • Chlorophyll — a powerful antioxidant and detoxifying agent.

  • Phycocyanin — a natural blue pigment with anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Fatty acids — including GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), rarely found in other plant products.

Benefits of spirulina for the body

Phycocyanin stimulates the production of white blood cells, while antioxidants protect cells from free radicals. It lowers “bad” cholesterol (LDL), raises “good” cholesterol (HDL), and normalizes blood pressure.

Spirulina removes heavy metals, including arsenic and mercury, and cleanses the liver and blood. It is ideal for people with anemia, vegetarians, and women during menstruation or pregnancy. Due to its high protein content, it creates a feeling of fullness, reduces appetite, and stimulates metabolism.

Reduces the symptoms of acne and eczema, rejuvenates the skin thanks to antioxidants and amino acids. It also improves mood, fights fatigue, and helps with chronic exhaustion.

How to take spirulina correctly

The most convenient way to take spirulina is in tablet form. This allows for dosage control and avoids the specific taste of the algae.

Recommended dosage:

  • Starting dose: 1–2 tablets per day (500 mg each).

  • Optimal dose: 3–6 tablets per day, depending on the body's needs.

  • Maximum dose: up to 10 tablets (with doctor’s approval).

Recommendations for use:

  • Take before or during meals, with plenty of water.

  • Avoid taking late in the evening — it may increase energy and make falling asleep difficult.

  • Can be combined with vitamins, protein shakes, vegetable smoothies.

  • Course — 1–3 months with breaks of 2–4 weeks.

Who is spirulina suitable for?

Vegetarians and vegans (as a source of protein and B12). People with weakened immunity and those recovering from illness, surgery, or during periods of high physical/mental stress. Women during pregnancy and lactation (after consulting a doctor). People losing weight or with digestive problems.

Contraindications and precautions

  • Individual intolerance.

  • Autoimmune diseases (spirulina stimulates immunity).

  • Gout (may increase purine levels).

  • Patients on anticoagulants (due to vitamin K).

  • Children under 6 years old — only with a doctor's permission.

How to choose quality spirulina?

When choosing spirulina tablets, pay attention to: Origin: grown in clean ecological conditions (California, India, China); organic certification; absence of additives, flavorings, dyes; production date and expiration date.

The best product in Ukraine is Spirulina from "Tibetan Formula"Patients report significant improvements in metabolism as well as blood iron levels.

Spirulina is not just a trendy superfood but a scientifically proven source of beneficial nutrients to support health, energy, beauty, and longevity. In tablet form, it is an ideal solution for daily wellness without extra effort. However, it is important to follow the dosage, consider contraindications, and buy only high-quality, verified products.
